Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is small, but mighty. Established as a national park in 2000, this lesser known national park has so many hidden treasures including wetlands,  the Ohio and Erie Canal towpath trail (an awesome bike trail through the park!), and amazing rock formations.

The Ledges Trail leads through a phenomenal area of the park and is shown in this gallery.  The area has an incredible geological history, beginning as an ancient sea, later changing into a river, which was then shaped by glaciers leaving behind amazing rock formations. As I hiked along the Ledges Trail, I was surprised by the colors on the rock faces- vivid greens, oranges, yellows, pinks, and blues. My favorite part though, was all of the tenacious trees growing out of the rocks! I love twisty trees and this hike had them in abundance!

Another area of the park that we explored was the beaver marsh. It was filled with water lilies, wildflowers, turtles, and a plethora of birds. The most notable bird was the great blue heron. These birds are four feet tall and have a wingspan of almost seven feet! The park has a large colony of the great blue herons and we were lucky enough to be visiting in May during their hatching season.
